Mini SOLO EXHIBITION |SHAPESHIFTER | Islip Art Museum

Opening Reception June 25th, 2016, 8pm-11pm

November 22nd ONE NIGHT SOLO EXHIBITION |Torn and Suspended: A Collection of Watercolor Collages and Mobiles

This exhibit will be suspended in time for three hours. There will be delicious food  and you can interact with some of the art. Please come and enjoy yourself for few moments that will never happen again.

“Torn and Suspended: A Collection of Watercolor Collages & Mobiles” is fully utilizing the cozy space of NYC Visual Art, incorporating art throughout the space in the form of Watercolor Collage Mobiles hanging from the ceiling and pipes, Paper Sculptures on table surfaces and Watercolor Collage Paintings being being mounted directly on the wall. Some of the art will be interactive for the guests’ enjoyment. One wall is being darkened for Watercolor Collage Paintings so that they can be mounted and all the torn edges can be visible, as was initially intended, with no semblance of a bounding box. Some pieces will be “framed” as they will be mounted on finished wood.

*as a gift, there will be Limited Signed and Hand-Painted by Anu Annam, on Archival Arches Watercolor Paper, souvenir Postcards given to the first 25 people who arrive at the show.

ARTIST STATEMENT

It’s become a part of the human condition to reach states in our lives where we feel divided, “caught between two worlds”, ambivalent…torn. Whether we may be between (or choosing between) careers, lovers, residences or social identities, we can get caught up in such intricacies of thought and personal pathos that we can feel anywhere from overwhelmed to empty. While we are in this spiritually amorphous state, in this magnificent mess, every now and then a crystallization of ideas can form in the human artist’s brain that can reveal itself to us as beautiful. I believe, through admiration of the beauty of our chaos, we can find acceptance.

In “Torn and Suspended”, colors and lines have been disassembled with a decidedly hand-tearing method and reattached, over and over again to find a new harmony within one painting or mobile or even two or three. I am using these Watercolor Collages and Watercolor Collage Mobiles to recreate the pastiche of thoughts that create my moments of truths. The artwork is seemingly ephemeral, but the experience and lessons for me are suspended in time.

June 4th SOLO SHOW at Campari in East Northport

Renowned for her rare ability to capture emotions and auras in her Watercolor Portraiture, Anu Annam’s recent Watercolor Collages, releases her artwork from the boundaries of a squared-off area, opening it into the realm of sculpture. She collages the picture upon itself, transforming an already completed piece into a new artwork that possess all the same attributes, a phenomenon that mirrors reactions in in chemistry. Anu Annam has always worked from the mind, but this work comes from a deeper, bodily place. This work represents rebirth: both rebirth of the piece itself, and rebirth of herself as an artist.

Through her technique of tearing, Anu has set her paintings free from the boundaries of the box. It is a visceral experience which allows her to change a completed painting–completed in the last 24 hours or years ago–and reappropriate a past image to express present feelings. Abstraction overcomes representation and tears interact with brushstrokes. The cardboard guitars of Picasso were an inspiration for this recent artwork.

In removing space and rearranging content Anu tells about her own experiences: Spaces in the head removed, brain injuries, emotional challenges, no mouth, an act of silencing. In this work she has moved beyond the head, into the gut.

This show will feature both Anu Annam’s Watercolor Portraits and Watercolor Collages.

We hope you can attend this unique, painting-meets-sculpture show.
